How Personalisation Works: From Your Wording to Preview, Proof and Laser

You choose a piece and add your wording, check it in the live preview or, for bespoke signs and place names, on a free digital proof, and once it's confirmed we laser cut it, make it by hand in our UK studio and post it to you. The rule that matters most sits in the middle: nothing is cut until you've checked your wording, by confirming the spelling in the preview or approving your proof.
There's a particular kind of hesitation that comes with typing a name into a box on a website. It might be your own two names and a wedding date, or a baby's name that's only a few weeks old, or the name of someone you've lost. You want it to be exactly right, and you're trusting a stranger to make it so. This page explains how personalisation works at each stage, why it's done that way, and the small checks that stop a typo from ever reaching the laser.
What happens when you order a personalised piece?
It starts with you choosing the piece, its size, finish and lettering style, and adding your wording when you order. For gifts and baubles, the live preview shows your design as you type, and you tick a box to confirm the spelling before you order. For bespoke pieces (wedding signs, table plans, place names, table name signs and surname cake toppers) we lay out your design and send you a free digital proof, usually within 1 working day.
If you have a proof, you check it and either approve it or tell us what to change. If you ask for changes, we send an updated proof, and that loop repeats until it's right. Only then does your design go to the laser. We make your pieces in 3–5 working days after you order (or after you approve your proof, for bespoke pieces), then pack them and send them by Royal Mail Tracked 48 or Tracked 24, free on UK orders over £45.
For bespoke pieces, the clock starts when you approve, which means the quickest way to speed up an order is to reply to your proof promptly. A proof that sits unread in an inbox for four days adds four days to everything after it.
Getting your wording right before you send it
Most mistakes on personalised pieces don't happen at the laser. They happen at the keyboard, in the wording typed at checkout, often late at night and often on a phone. A few habits make a real difference.
- Type names exactly as they should appear. Accents, hyphens and capitals included: "Siân", "Mary-Kate", "McAllister". Autocorrect is not your friend here.
- Write dates the way you want them shown. "14.08.2027" and "Saturday 14 August 2027" look very different on a sign, and the second takes up far more space.
- Say where lines should break, and if you'd prefer "&" or "and".
- Keep it shorter than you think. On any piece, fewer words means larger, more legible lettering.
- Send lists as lists. For place names or a table plan, one name per line, grouped by table, copied from the same spreadsheet you'll check against later.
That last point saves a surprising amount of trouble, because retyping a guest list by hand is exactly where a name goes missing.
What is a digital proof?
A proof, which we send for bespoke signs, table plans and place names, is a picture of exactly what we'll cut: your wording, laid out in your chosen lettering, on your chosen finish and size. It's not a rough sketch or an impression of the style. What you approve is what we make.
It exists because the laser is perfectly obedient. It reproduces the file it's given, with no judgement about whether "Catherine" should have been "Katherine". Once acrylic is cut, it can't be uncut. The proof, or the preview for gifts, is the last point at which a change costs nothing, which is why we treat checking it as the most important stage of the whole process.
We also design for cutting, not just for the screen. Fine strokes in a script lettering can look elegant at screen size and turn fragile once cut, so we check they're thick enough to hold together, and that joined letters properly connect. Sometimes we'll suggest a small change, such as moving a long double-barrelled name onto two lines so it doesn't have to shrink to fit. If you'd like to know more about the material itself, our guide to what laser-cut acrylic is explains it.
How do you check a proof or preview properly?
The difficulty with proofreading your own wording is that your brain already knows what it's supposed to say, so it quietly reads what you meant rather than what's there. Names you've written hundreds of times are the worst for this. The answer is to slow down and look at the proof or preview as a stranger would.
Start with names, letter by letter, paying particular attention to double letters and to anything with an unusual spelling. Then check dates and numbers, including the weekday if you've included one, because a Saturday that's actually a Sunday is an easy slip. Look at capitals and punctuation next: "Mr & Mrs" or "Mr and Mrs", a full stop at the end or not, and whether every apostrophe belongs where it is. Read the lines in order and make sure they flow the way you'd say them aloud. Then read the whole thing aloud, because your ear catches what your eye skips, and finally ask someone else to read it.
Say you're checking place names for 90 guests. Reading down the proof and thinking "that all looks fine" isn't a check. Instead, go through your spreadsheet one row at a time and tick each name off as you find it on the proof. By the end you know two things for certain: everyone is there, and nobody appears twice. It takes ten minutes and it's the most valuable ten minutes in the whole order.
From approval to your door
Once your wording is confirmed, your design goes to the laser, which cuts the acrylic or engraves the oak exactly as the file describes. We then check the edges and lettering, assemble layered pieces such as mirror-gold lettering on a frosted backing, and finish each piece by hand, comparing it against your approved proof or preview before it's packed. If your acrylic arrives with a protective film, peel it off just before use, and our guide to cleaning acrylic signs covers aftercare.
For a wedding, build in a comfortable margin rather than ordering for the last possible day. Our guide to wedding signs sets out when to order each piece. For Christmas 2026, order personalised pieces by Friday 11 December 2026 for Christmas delivery, and our Christmas 2026 last order dates page has the full detail.
What if something isn't right?
Because every piece is made to your wording, personalised items can't be returned for a change of mind. If anything arrives faulty or not as designed, we'll remake it or refund you. Your statutory rights are unaffected. That's also the honest reason checking your preview or proof matters so much to both of us: it's the moment when getting it right is easy.
Where to start
Browse our wedding signs or personalised gifts, choose your finish and lettering, and add your wording when you order. Place names start from £1.80 per name, and every one is checked against your proof before it leaves the studio.
